Why it is important that we now charge VAT on our services

From 1st April 2026, Glas Quartet will be registered for VAT. For Glas Quartet, charging VAT is essential not just as a legal requirement, but as a way of protecting our customers and providing a reliable, professional service, especially in a market where some competitors may offer cheaper “cash prices.”

Although “cash prices” from competitors may appear more affordable upfront, they are unethicial and often come with hidden risks. Customers may have little, to no recourse if the quality of the product or service is poor, if guarantees are not honoured, or if the business disappears altogether. By contrast, Glas Quartet’s VAT-compliant approach ensures transparency in pricing and a commitment to standing over their work. This is especially important when you are spending so much on your event already. The VAT threshold for musicians is low and our margins are tight which is why cash is more attractive to some. However, if the Covid Pandemic lockdown taught us anything, it is that a mix of both ethics and paperwork are essential to ensure everyone has a fair outcome in the unexpected. You have our word, but you also have a paper trail and guarantee.

When we charge VAT, every transaction is properly recorded and invoiced. This gives you a clear proof of purchase, which is crucial if you need follow-up support, repairs, or to raise any issues. Without this documentation, as is often the case with cash-in-hand arrangements, consumers can be left without any formal evidence, making it difficult to enforce their rights or seek a resolution if something goes wrong.

Charging VAT also signals that we are operating fully within the law and under the oversight of authorities such as the Revenue Commissioners. For customers, this provides confidence that you are dealing with a legitimate, accountable business. If a problem arises, there are clear channels for complaints and protections that simply don’t exist with informal, off-the-books transactions.

Ultimately, charging VAT allows us to offer you, the customer, peace of mind. It demonstrates professionalism and trust, and ensures that every client is protected, not just at the point of sale, but throughout the entire lifecycle of the service. We care about you as our client and we want you to have all the protections you need and an event without the worry of envelopes of cash, have they been paid, will they show up and all the other stress that comes with an under the counter transaction.
